Built in 1819 to connect Regent Street with the major shopping street of Piccadilly (the “circus” refers to “circular open space at a street junction”), it now links directly to the theatres on Shaftesbury Avenue as well as the Haymarket, Coventry Street (onwards to Leicester Square) and Glasshouse Street.” – Wikipedeia. Basic Safety Tips When You Travel in London

Travel in London is typically a safe thing. The police are competent at what they do, the cameras discourage open crimes, and the people of London are generally a good lot to begin with. Personal safety is, however, a responsibility that all people must maintain. This is especially so for tourists, who may not be familiar enough with the city to prevent themselves from getting into trouble.

Here are some basic safety tips to keep in mind when you travel in London:

Crossing the road

In England, You may find that cars travel on the “wrong” side of the street, and a moment of carelessness may land you in the hospital or worse. Always make it a habit to look both ways before crossing the street in order to make sure you do not run into accidents while crossing the road.

Traveling at night

While crooks are discouraged from mugging you in open daylight or in view of the cameras, they will attempt to mug you in the darker areas of town. Walk with friends, stay in well-lit areas and avoid drawing too much attention with your jewelry, clothing and other belongings. You can travel in London with style, but try to keep things at a minimum if you walk around at night.

Clubbing and drinking

Rape is a serious risk when you go out clubbing and drinking, especially if you are a foreign girl in London. You always have to be vigilant and keep a sharp eye out for your drink. A pill or two can be popped in your drink, knocking you or your friends out for the night.

Credit card safety

Expenses are inevitable when you travel in London, and you may have to whip out your credit card on a few occasions. Never let the card out of your sight, even when you hand it to the waiter, in order to prevent it from being “swiped”.  A stolen identity is no joke, especially when you have your life savings in that bank account.

Crowds and pickpockets

London has a lot of people in it, and you may find yourself constantly being jostled as you walk through the crowds. Grip your wallet or bag tightly when you find yourself pressed in by people, and try to avoid looking as foreign as possible. The less noticeable you are, the less likely a pickpocket will go for you.

Watching your belongings

Aside from the obvious risk of having them stolen, unattended bags are usually suspected to contain bombs. Do not leave your bags and belongings alone if you do not want to come back with a bomb squad poking around your underwear and searching for improvised explosives.

So there you have it, six basic safety tips to keep in mind when you travel in London. Remember them, and you will be able to enjoy your trip around this great old city free from the risk of crime or accidents.

Travel in London: Ways to Get Around Town

Travel in London can be a headache if you do not how to get around the twists and turns of the city. Even the most oriented tourist can easily get lost in city, and the archaic layout of the city does not help in the process. While some people like the experience of getting lost, not all people have the time, the money or the nerves to get lost while touring a totally new city.

This is exactly why you need to know the ways to get around town if you want to truly enjoy the experience. Choose the right mode of transportation when you travel in London, and you will be able to go where you need to go and enjoy it in the process:

Walking and Cycling

The most rudimentary form of transportation is using your own two feet. You won’t be able to avoid walking around town, especially if you are a tourist, but remember to keep a sharp eye out for landmarks and street names if you choose to do so. Remember that it is so very easy to get lost in London, which will definitely happen to you if you do not get your bearings straight before venturing out for a walk.

Trams and Buses

Trams and buses go through a predetermined route, which makes them some of the more affordable overland transports available. Travel in London, however, is rather limited when you use these modes of transport , as there routes buses and trams travel through are quite limited in number. Only certain areas of London are covered, and you may find traffic to be a major problem in the process.

The Tube

London has one of the oldest underground subways in the world, and taking the “tube” is arguably one of the fastest methods of getting around London in a snap. Remember to refer to the color-coded maps around the stations in order for you to know where you are headed. It also helps to get an Oyster card if you plan to use the tube multiple times during your trip, as you save a little more money when you compare it to buying paper tickets.

The Famed London Taxis

Even if travel in London appears daunting, the taxi drivers of London are famous for their ability to weave in and out of the roads in record time. Don’t expect the price tag to be cheap, but you may want to get a ride at least once for you to experience the unique thrill of moving through the hidden streets of London. You may even see a few sights you would never have seen in the first place if you took the usual modes of transport in the first place.

Whether you choose to walk or hire a taxi, remember to keep all these ups and downs in mind the next time you travel in London. Do that, and you may just find your experience in this grand old city a much better one in the end.
